The Dobermann is the only breed in Germany to bear the name of its famous original breeder, Frédéric Louis Dobermann (2.1.1834 – 9.6.1894). 

 

Frédéric Louis Dobermann was a tax collector, manager of a rendering plant and municipal employee legally mandated to pick up stray dogs.

The Dobermann breed is the product of the crossing of dogs called "butcher dogs" (the ancestors of the current Rottweiler) and sheepdogs that existed in Thüringia. It was through the crossing of "butcher's dogs" and "Thüringian shepherds" that Dobermann laid the foundations of the breed that bears his name today, around the middle of the 19th century.

Frédéric Louis Dobermann wishes to obtain, following crosses made over several years, a dog of medium size, built in strength, muscular, which, despite all its substance, is recognized by a silhouette full of elegance and distinction. He must have all the qualities of a companion, protection, utility and family dog.

Dobermanns were often used as guard and protection dogs for herds and as police dogs. Their frequent use in police service earned them the nickname "police dog". In hunting, they were used to fight predators. It was almost inevitable that from the beginning of the 20th century, the Dobermann was officially recognized as a police dog.

GENERAL ASPECT

​The Dobermann is medium sized, constrong and well muscled. By its elegant lines, its proud presence, its strong character and its resolute expression, it corresponds to the ideal image of the dog.

SIGNIFICANT PROPORTIONS

The Dobermann, especially the male, is practically inscribed in a square. In the male, the length of the trunk (measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock), must not exceed by more than 5% (in the female not more than 10%) the height at the withers.

BEHAVIOR / CHARACTER

The Dobermann is basically friendly and peaceful; in the family setting, he is very attached and kind to children. We are looking for a temperament and a bite of medium intensity. DRESS

Coat quality: The coat is short, rough and tight. Smooth and well coated, it is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the body. No undercoat is allowed.
 

COAT COLOR

​The Dobermann is bredin two color variants: black or brown, with well-pronounced and clearly demarcated rust-coloured fire markings. The tan markings are on the muzzle, in the form of spots on the cheeks and above the eyes, on the throat, on the chest (two spots), on the metacarpals and metatarsals, on the feet, on the inner side of the thighs, around the anus and at the tip of the buttocks.
